Biography

Andrea Kimi Antonelli: a meteoric rise to Formula 1

Son of sportscar driver Marco Antonelli, the young talent from Bologna made waves early in karting, collecting an astonishing number of trophies and victories. His potential did not go unnoticed, and Mercedes quickly recruited him, recognizing a future star in the making.

Antonelli made his car racing debut at just 15, with titles following swiftly – in Italian and ADAC F4 in 2022, and the Formula Regional Middle East and European championships the following year. Many expected him to take the F3 route, but Mercedes decided a direct promotion to F2 would accelerate his development and showcase his exceptional abilities to the world.

His start in F2 was solid, consistently scoring points without immediate podiums. As the season progressed, Antonelli began to turn heads, demonstrating skill, bravery, and maturity, earning the trust of Mercedes talent scout Gwen Lagrue and team boss Toto Wolff.

A Sprint race victory in the rain at Silverstone was followed by a maiden Feature win at the Hungaroring. At Spa-Francorchamps, he stunned the paddock with a daring wet-weather move on Franco Colapinto at Eau Rouge, cementing his reputation as a rare talent.

Shortly after his 18th birthday, Mercedes announced Antonelli would replace seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in the main team, confirming the young Italian was ready to shine in Formula 1. Despite a heavy crash in his Monza practice debut, FP1 sessions in Mexico and countless laps in older Mercedes machinery have prepared him well for the challenges ahead.
