Biography

Founded in 1963 by the visionary and relentless Bruce McLaren, the McLaren Formula 1 team has built one of the most successful legacies in the sport’s history. Since its first appearance in 1966, the team has accumulated an extraordinary number of wins, pole positions and podium finishes, along with 10 constructors’ championships. Over the decades, legendary drivers such as Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen and Lewis Hamilton have all achieved major success wearing McLaren colours.

2025
McLaren emerge as the dominant force of the season, securing the constructors’ championship with six races still remaining. Team mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri battle intensely for the drivers’ title, each claiming seven victories. Norris ultimately prevails, holding off a strong late challenge from Max Verstappen.

2024
Return to the top of Formula 1 with their first constructors’ championship since 1998, despite Red Bull’s strong start to the year. Lando Norris finishes second in the drivers’ standings with four wins, while Oscar Piastri adds two victories of his own.

2023
A difficult opening phase gives way to consistent podium contention as the season progresses. Norris and rookie Oscar Piastri collect nine podium finishes between them, lifting McLaren to fourth in the constructors’ championship.

2022
Slip to fifth overall, narrowly behind Alpine. Lando Norris delivers the team’s only podium at Imola and scores the majority of their points. Daniel Ricciardo struggles for form and leaves the team at the end of the season.

2021
Claim their first victory since 2012 with a memorable one-two finish at Monza, thanks to Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. Despite this highlight, McLaren end the year fourth after losing out to Ferrari in the fight for third.

2020
A consistent and competitive season sees McLaren finish third in the standings as Ferrari falter. Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris both secure podiums, and the team confirms a switch to Mercedes power from 2021.

2019
With the Renault partnership improving, McLaren firmly establish themselves as best of the midfield. Rookie Lando Norris impresses alongside Carlos Sainz, whose podium in Brazil marks the team’s first in five years.

2018
An initial boost from switching to Renault engines delivers strong early results, but momentum fades as the season goes on. Despite Fernando Alonso’s efforts, McLaren finish sixth overall.

2017
A third challenging year with Honda engines leads to the end of their partnership. Limited points are scored by Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, prompting a move to Renault power for 2018.

2016
Signs of progress appear in McLaren’s second season back with Honda, though podiums remain out of reach. Fernando Alonso scores the majority of points, and Stoffel Vandoorne makes a strong debut appearance.

2015
The renewed McLaren-Honda alliance struggles badly with reliability and performance issues. Despite experienced drivers Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, the team end the season ninth.

2014
In their final year with Mercedes power before switching to Honda, McLaren endure a difficult campaign. A double podium in Australia is a rare highlight in an otherwise modest fifth-place finish.

2013
A radical car design fails to deliver the desired performance, ending a long points-scoring streak. McLaren finish fifth overall without securing a single podium.

2012
Early promise includes a season-opening win, but tyre issues and reliability problems undermine a potential title challenge despite victories for Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

2011
Unable to consistently match Red Bull’s qualifying pace, McLaren nonetheless prove their closest challengers. Hamilton and Button each claim three wins as the team finish second overall.

2010
Innovative technology and strong wet-weather performance help McLaren lead the standings early in the season. They ultimately finish second after five victories.

2009
A slow start is followed by a strong recovery, with Lewis Hamilton securing wins in Hungary and Singapore. McLaren end the season third, narrowly ahead of Ferrari.

2008
Lewis Hamilton wins his first drivers’ championship, though McLaren fall short in the constructors’ battle and finish second.

2007
Despite eight race wins, McLaren are excluded from the constructors’ standings following a major controversy. Hamilton and Alonso finish level on points, just missing the drivers’ title.

2006
Race pace improves later in the season, but McLaren remain winless for the first time in ten years, finishing third overall.

2005
The MP4-20 proves extremely fast, but reliability issues cost McLaren the constructors’ championship, despite ten race victories.

2004
A difficult start gives way to a strong comeback, highlighted by a win in Belgium, as McLaren finish fifth.

2003
Finish third in the constructors’ standings, with Kimi Räikkönen narrowly missing out on the drivers’ title.

2002
End the season third behind Ferrari and Williams, with David Coulthard placing fifth in the drivers’ championship.

2000 – 2001
Consistently finish second in both drivers’ and constructors’ championships with Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard.
